Pakistan’s airports have recently come under scrutiny as allegations of corruption and harassment by airport authorities, including the Customs, Airport Security Force (ASF), and Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) officials, have surfaced. Reports have shed light on the disturbing incidents experienced by passengers, raising concerns about the integrity and professionalism of these key security agencies.
Accusations of corruption involve instances where airport officials demand bribes or engage in illegal activities, compromising the safety and transparency of airport operations. Khaqan Murtaza, Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), made the allegations while briefing the Senate Standing Committee’s meeting on Aviation at the Parliament House on Monday, Dawn newspaper reported on Tuesday.
These allegations have undermined public trust and have had a detrimental impact on both the reputation of the airport authorities and the overall travel experience of passengers.
Furthermore, reports of harassment by airport authorities have added to the growing discontent among travelers. Passengers have alleged instances of inappropriate behavior, verbal abuse, and unwarranted searches by airport personnel. Murtaza alleged that the Customs, Airport Security Force (ASF) and Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) officials “continue to collect money by harassing passengers,” the paper said.
The meeting – chaired by Senator Hidayatullah – highlighted the lack of coordination among agencies at airports and pointed out impolite attitudes with passengers, some participants had experienced.
“You will not find any uniformed armed personnel at any airport in the world,” Murtaza said. “It looks like an aggressive atmosphere that is unheard of elsewhere. It feels as if we live in a cantonment.” Committee Chairman Hidayatullah also raised concerns about the “attitude” of the ANF at the airport and asked how an expatriate will feel when he lands and finds four personnel standing in different uniforms in front of him.
The Customs, ASF, and ANF, being integral components of airport security, are responsible for upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and public service. However, the allegations have exposed gaps in the system, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive reforms and stringent accountability measures to address these concerns.
To combat corruption and ensure passenger safety, authorities must prioritize transparency, accountability, and effective training programs for airport personnel. It is crucial to establish clear protocols and strict disciplinary measures to prevent any abuse of power or misconduct.
Corruption is a big issue in Pakistan which is listed at 140th position on Transparency International’s 2022 list of the least corrupt nations.
Moreover, fostering a culture of respect and professionalism within airport authorities is essential. Encouraging the reporting of incidents and creating channels for passengers to provide feedback and file complaints can help identify and address instances of corruption and harassment promptly.
The government and relevant authorities must demonstrate a firm commitment to addressing these allegations, conducting thorough investigations, and taking appropriate actions against any individuals found guilty of corruption or misconduct. Such measures are crucial for rebuilding trust and restoring the reputation of Pakistan’s airports as safe and welcoming spaces for travelers.
