The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf on Thursday filed a contempt of court petition against the Election Commission of Pakistan in Peshawar High Court for failing to issue certificate of the party’s intra-party election results and the restoration of the Bat symbol despite Court’s clear directives.
Peshawar High Court on Wednesday nullified the Election Commission of Pakistan’s order of stripping the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf off its symbol Bat and allowed the party to contest general elections under bat as its election emblem.
Terming the ECP’s decision as “incorrect” the court had further directed the electoral watchdog to upload the PTI’s certificate on its website. In its petition, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf legal team contended that despite the PHC orders issued on Wednesday nullifying the Election Commission of Pakistan’s order of stripping the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) off its iconic symbol Bat and allowed the party to contest forthcoming general elections under bat as its election emblem, the ECP failed to upload the certificate on the PTI’s intra-party elections on its website.
The party has named Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja, ECP members and secretary as the respondents in the case. Earlier in the day, PTI’s chief election commissioner Niazullah Niazi submitted a certified copy of the PHC decision to the ECP in person.
“Election Commission of Pakistan’s failure to comply with the Higher Court orders falls under contempt of court,” the petition pleaded.
