The consumers of K-Electric (KE) are set to face another price hike, as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) granted approval for an additional surcharge of Rs1.52 per unit on Thursday, Express News reported.
Nepra, at the request of the federal government, decided to impose the surcharge, which will be applicable to KE consumers from November 2023 to December 2024.
The decision will impose an extra burden of Rs24.5 billion on consumers. Nepra has communicated its ruling to the federal government, which is expected to issue an official notification soon.

Nepra had earlier indicated that it would allow the ex-Wapda distribution companies (XWDISCOs) as well as KE to transfer the burden of Rs22.92 billion to their consumers.
Different stakeholders have been opposing any increase in electricity rates as energy has become unaffordable for consumers due to several tariff hikes to meet commitments made under the IMF loan programme.
The base electricity price has almost doubled, excluding taxes and fuel charges adjustment, over the past couple of years.
