Sylvester Stallone is gearing up to take on new heights with a remake of his 1993 blockbuster, Cliffhanger. The action thriller will be directed by Ric Roman Waugh, who has previously directed Angel Has Fallen and Greenland. Stallone will reprise his role as the mountain climber and rescue ranger, Gabe Walker. The reboot has been scripted by Mark Bianculli, a writer-consulting producer on Amazon series Hunters.
Cliffhanger had originally hit the screens in 1993, directed by Renny Harlin, and was a huge commercial success despite the production’s rough patches that almost bankrupted the lead production company, Carolco. The movie starred Stallone as Gabe Walker, who is haunted by a failed rescue mission and gets called up for a rescue with his former colleagues. The mission turns out to be a hoax, with a group of international thieves attempting to locate their stolen loot after a failed air heist, leading to some nail-biting cliffhanging scenes.
Neal H. Moritz’s Original Film, best known for the multi-billion-dollar franchise, The Fast and the Furious, will produce the reboot with production and sales outfit, Rocket Science, as well as Stallone and Braden Aftergood’s Balboa Productions. Rocket Science is expected to launch sales during this month’s Cannes film market. CAA Media will represent North American and Chinese rights for the movie.
The reboot’s producers include Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe for Original Film, along with Stallone and Thorsten Schumacher and his partner Lars Sylvest for Rocket Science, who will also finance. Additionally, Waugh, Ana Lily Amirpour, Chance Wright, Gianluca Chakra, and Hisham Alghanim will serve as executive producers.
Waugh expressed his excitement about directing the next chapter of Cliffhanger in a statement, saying, “Growing up with the biggest action films of the ’80s and ’90s, working on many of them myself, Cliffhanger was by far one of my favorite spectacles. To be at the helm of the next chapter, scaling the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true. It’s going to be a great challenge and a blast taking this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”
Stallone has been one of Hollywood’s most successful action movie stars, with several hits under his belt. Some of his notable films include the Rocky and Rambo franchises, Demolition Man, The Expendables trilogy, and Tango & Cash, to name a few. With Stallone returning to reprise his role in Cliffhanger, fans can’t wait to see what new heights the reboot will take them.
